Question 1

When is heart valve replacement surgery needed?

Accepted Answer

Valve replacement is generally recommended when a heart valve becomes significantly narrowed (stenosis) or leaky (regurgitation) enough to cause symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue or chest pain, or when it's straining the heart even without prominent symptoms, as shown on imaging like echocardiography. Common causes include age-related valve degeneration, rheumatic heart disease, congenital valve abnormalities, and infections affecting the valve. Your cardiologist monitors valve disease over time and recommends surgery once it reaches a point where the benefits clearly outweigh the risks of intervention.

Question 2

What is the difference between mechanical and biological (tissue) valve replacements?

Accepted Answer

Mechanical valves are made of durable synthetic materials and typically last a lifetime, but require lifelong blood-thinning medication to prevent blood clots from forming on the valve. Biological (tissue) valves, made from treated animal or, less commonly, human tissue, don't require long-term blood thinners in most cases but generally wear out over 10-20 years and may need replacement later in life. The choice depends on factors like age, lifestyle, bleeding risk, and whether future pregnancy is being considered, which your cardiac team will discuss with you.

Question 3

What is TAVR and how does it differ from open surgical valve replacement?

Accepted Answer

TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) is a minimally invasive procedure that replaces the aortic valve using a catheter threaded through a blood vessel, typically from the groin, without the need for open-heart surgery, making it particularly valuable for patients at higher surgical risk. It generally offers a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery compared to traditional open surgical valve replacement, though not every patient's anatomy is suitable for this approach. Your cardiac team will determine whether TAVR or surgical replacement is more appropriate for your specific case.

Question 4

What is the recovery time after heart valve replacement surgery?

Accepted Answer

Recovery after open surgical valve replacement typically involves a hospital stay of about a week, with full recovery taking six to twelve weeks, supported by cardiac rehabilitation. TAVR, being less invasive, generally involves a much shorter hospital stay, often just two to three days, with a quicker return to normal activities, sometimes within one to two weeks. Your cardiac team will give you a specific recovery timeline based on which procedure you had and your individual health.

Question 5

Will I need lifelong follow-up after heart valve replacement?

Accepted Answer

Yes, regular follow-up with your cardiologist, including periodic echocardiograms to monitor how the new valve is functioning, is needed for life after valve replacement. If you have a mechanical valve, you'll also need regular blood tests to monitor blood-thinning medication levels, ensuring they stay in a safe, effective range. This ongoing monitoring helps catch any valve-related complications early, allowing prompt treatment if issues develop over the years following surgery.
