Question 1

What conditions does thoracic and vascular surgery treat?

Accepted Answer

This combined speciality treats conditions of the chest organs and blood vessels, including aortic aneurysms and dissections, peripheral artery disease requiring bypass or other surgical treatment, carotid artery disease affecting stroke risk, varicose veins, and, on the thoracic side, lung and oesophageal conditions requiring surgery. Bringing thoracic and vascular expertise together is particularly valuable for complex conditions where the chest and major blood vessels are closely involved, such as thoracic aortic surgery.

Question 2

What is peripheral artery disease and how is it surgically treated?

Accepted Answer

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) occurs when blood vessels supplying the legs, and sometimes arms, become narrowed or blocked by plaque buildup, causing pain during walking or, in severe cases, pain at rest and non-healing wounds. Surgical treatment options include bypass surgery, creating a new path for blood flow around a blockage, or less invasive procedures like angioplasty and stenting for suitable blockages. The choice depends on the location, length and severity of the blockage, assessed through imaging.

Question 3

How is carotid artery disease treated to prevent stroke?

Accepted Answer

Carotid artery disease, narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the brain, is treated based on the degree of narrowing and whether it has already caused symptoms like a mini-stroke (TIA). Treatment options range from medication and lifestyle changes for milder narrowing, to carotid endarterectomy, a surgery to remove plaque buildup from the artery, or carotid artery stenting, a less invasive catheter-based alternative, for more significant narrowing. Treating significant carotid disease can substantially reduce future stroke risk.

Question 4

What is the recovery like after major vascular surgery like aortic repair?

Accepted Answer

Recovery after major vascular surgery, such as open aortic aneurysm repair, typically involves an initial ICU stay for close monitoring, followed by a total hospital stay of one to two weeks depending on the complexity of surgery, with full recovery taking two to three months. Less invasive endovascular procedures generally have a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery. Your surgical team will provide a specific recovery timeline and activity guidance based on your particular procedure.

Question 5

What symptoms after vascular surgery need urgent attention?

Accepted Answer

Contact your surgical team urgently if you notice increasing redness, swelling, warmth or discharge from a surgical incision, sudden severe pain, numbness or coldness in a limb, sudden chest or back pain, or signs of reduced blood flow such as a pale, cool extremity. These can indicate infection, graft complications or a blood flow problem that needs prompt evaluation rather than waiting for a scheduled follow-up appointment.
