What a seizure looks like depends almost entirely on which part of the brain is caught up in it.

Common symptoms

· Loss of awareness.

· Jerking or shaking, sometimes on one side, sometimes the whole body.

· Muscles stiffening.

· A fall that comes without warning.

· Confusion or exhaustion once it's over.

Subtle or early symptoms: Not every seizure is obvious. That's exactly why so many go unnoticed for a while.

· A few seconds of blankness that gets written off as daydreaming.

· A strange taste or smell that appears from nowhere.

· A sudden wave of fear, or déjà vu.

· Small repetitive movements, lip smacking or plucking at clothing, during an episode.

· Brief confusion that clears fast enough to be dismissed.

Symptoms that may worsen over time: Left alone, without diagnosis or treatment, these patterns don't tend to stay still.

· Seizures becoming more frequent.

· Episodes are running longer.

· New types showing up that weren't there before.

· Recovery afterward taking longer than it used to.

Emergency or red-flag symptoms

· A seizure lasted for more than five minutes.

· Trouble breathing during one.

· An injury from a fall or convulsion.

· Seizures stacking one after another with no real recovery in between.

· Sudden weakness or neurological decline that doesn't resolve once the seizure ends.

Any of these needs urgent care, not an appointment booked for next week. There's a quieter cost too. People living with an undiagnosed seizure disorder often carry a low, constant hum of anxiety about when the next episode might land. It ends up shaping ordinary choices: whether to drive, whether to swim, what kind of job feels safe to take.
