The aortic valve is a crucial valve in the heart that plays a vital role in distributing oxygenated blood from the ventricle to the entire body. When the aortic valve becomes narrow or stenotic due to any reason, it is called aortic stenosis. This condition is often age-related, known as degenerative aortic stenosis. However, this surgery is often required at an advanced age, and patients with comorbidities such as lung or kidney problems may not be suitable candidates or may face high-risk surgery. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) has significantly reduced the risks associated with aortic valve replacement in high-risk patients. Even younger patients who require aortic valve replacement are opting for this minimally invasive procedure over open-heart surgery.

The biggest advantage of TAVI is the quick return to a normal life. Patients can go home within 2-3 days after the surgery. If any complications arise, they can be easily managed. According to current guidelines, patients over 65 years old can opt for TAVI instead of open-heart surgery for aortic valve replacement. For younger patients, open-heart surgery is usually recommended. However, if a patient prefers TAVI, there are no restrictions, and it can be done.
