Safety Advice for New Coronavirus for Heart Patients

I am sure you have been through a lot of news and readable regarding information that preexisting illnesses makes a person even more prone to new coronavirus. Unfortunately it is true.

The age-wise incidence of the disease as reported is around one percent for below 10 years of age. 90 percent of all cases are reported between age group 30 and 80. Besides being affected the highest level of mortality has been reported in the age group above 80.

Chronic heart diseases too are also prevalent in elderly cases. Let us clear a few things while we explain the safety advice for heart patients pertaining to COVID-19.

Am I at a higher risk of getting a new coronavirus if I am a heart patient?

Unlike cancer patients where the immune system is compromised and the likelihood of a patient getting the disease are way high, heart diseases does not make you more susceptible. What heart disease does to you is that in case you are infected with COVID 19, the likelihood of the disease worsening is higher than a healthy individual. That might mean worse symptoms and more severe manifestations. Therefore it is of utmost importance to restrict its exposure.

Is it Ok to visit hospital for non-covid heart-related emergency?

If you are a chronic heart patient and at any time you feel angina like symptom or signs of brain stroke-like

  • Sudden chest pain
  • Radiation of pain to your arms, back, neck or jaw
  • Tightness of chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • A feeling of sickness
  • Drooping of the face onto one side,
  • Weakness holding one or both arms up,
  • Difficulty speaking or slurring of speech, it is highly recommended to get medical assistance.

First things first call and communicate that to your clinician and facility. Most hospitals assure that cardiology wing is way away from infectious setup. You can look for options, a facility that does not treat infectious diseases. Take your own car, don’t drive yourself. Cover your face with a thin cloth if not mask.

Who amongst heart patients are at most risks?

Heart patients who have had a heart transplant or valve transplant are at the highest risk due to intake of immunosuppressants. Some heart patients like the one suffering from valve dystrophy or other similar heart ailments along with pregnancy are also at a major risk of getting affected due to the new coronavirus. Some such anomalies include

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • Left ventricular hypertrophy due to high blood pressure,
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension,
  • Congenital heart disease and the like.

Other high-risk chronic heart patient categories are

  1. Elderly over 70 years
  2. Other overlapping pathologies like chronic lung or kidney disease
  • Overlapping diabetes
  1. Previous attacks of angina or heart failure or TIA
  2. A cardiac murmur due to any pathology
  3. Person with a recent heart-related surgery
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Excessive weight defined by the body mass index of forty and above
  1. Habit of chain-smoking

How about other arrhythmias and conductivity heart disorders?

High temperature may also intrude with the electrical activity of the heart. In case of such disturbances like

  • Brugada syndrome
  • Long QT syndrome
  • Tachycardia
  • Uncontrolled atrial fibrillation

If you present with a fever above 100 degrees, take medical help.
