Overview

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ beneath the human body’s liver. Its primary function is to store and concentrate bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver. When we consume fatty foods, the gallbladder contracts, releasing bile into the small intestine. Bile aids in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. The gallbladder’s ability to store and release bile at the right time is crucial for efficient digestion and overall digestive health. However, it is possible to live without a gallbladder if it needs to be surgically removed due to gallstones or other issues.

This small organ can be infected by different issues such as infection, inflammation, and other problems. In such situations, an individual may experience pain in the right side of the abdomen, vomiting, acid reflux, fever, or jaundice. Under such conditions, an individual may undergo gallbladder removal surgery.

Traditionally, the surgery can be performed in open gallbladder removal method and minimally invasive gallbladder removal surgery. Today, advanced technology and progress in medical science have also created an option for  The robotic arms perform the surgery, unlike the traditional surgery where a surgeon makes the incisions and performs the surgical procedure. The surgery has a high success rate and is highly followed by surgeons for greater precision, less hassle, and perfect results.

Causes and Symptoms of Gallbladder Removal

Mentioned below are a few causes and symptoms that lead to the removal of the gallbladder:

 Causes

    • Gallstones
    • Illnesses and infections
    • Tumours
    • Bile duct blockage

 Symptoms

    • Severe pain in the right side of the abdomen
    • Vomiting
    • Fever and chills
    • Nausea
    • Jaundice
    • Bloating

Types of Gallbladder Removal Surgery

    • Open Gallbladder Removal Surgery– Open gallbladder removal surgery has been traditionally followed for ages for gallbladder removal. The method involves an incision about 4 to 5 inches near the abdomen. Then, the surgeon removes the gallbladder carefully and wraps up the surgery by stitching the incision. The operated patient takes a few days to recover and buy the time needed to stay in the hospital under observation. After the surgery, the patient may also experience high blood loss, incision marks, and weakness.
    •  Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy– The procedure is known as minimally invasive surgery in layman’s language. The procedure involves making a small incision to insert a laparoscope with the camera and lights at the top for a better view of the surgical site. After reaching the gallbladder, another incision is made to remove the organ. The organ is removed carefully to avoid damaging the nearby tissues.
    •  Robotic Surgery- Surgery for removing the gallbladder with the help of robotic arms is known as robotic gallbladder surgery. The surgery is performed using a robot and the components performing the surgery. The arms of the robot are controlled by an open console operated by a surgeon. The console displays a 3D view of the patient’s insides, making it clearer for the surgeon to understand the surgical area. The robotic arms make incisions near the surgical area and then insert the components through the incision with the required surgical tools and camera to display the surgical site on the console.

A surgeon may not be able to reach narrow sites physically, but the robotic arms can do so with ease! The robotic arms can even turn 360 degrees, which is impossible for the surgeon. Many such advantageous points of the automatic machine make it a highly-opted option for surgeons today to remove the gallbladder. Robot-assisted gallbladder surgery has a high success rate and is highly practised by doctors to treat medical issues.

How is a robotic gallbladder surgery performed?

The procedure is performed by using the da Vinci Surgical System. The robotic procedure involves making 2 to 3 incisions depending on the patient’s medical state. Then, a laparoscope, camera, surgical tools, and robotic arms are inserted into the surgical site through the incisions. The trained surgeon moves the robotic arms perfectly and performs the surgery by causing minimal harm to the nearby tissues. The surgery is wrapped up within an hour.

What is a robotic gallbladder surgery?

Surgery for removing the gallbladder with the help of robotic arms is known as robotic gallbladder surgery. The surgery is performed using a robot and the components performing the surgery. The arms of the robot are controlled by an open console operated by a surgeon. The console displays a 3D view of the patient’s insides, making it more precise and clear for the surgeon to understand the surgical area.

Advantages of Robotic Gallbladder Surgery

Mentioned below are a few advantages of robotic gallbladder removal that make the whole process easy for the patient and the surgeon:

    • 3D Display– One of the most significant advantages of robotic surgery is the surgeon can have a 3D view of the surgical site on the console. It helps the surgeon have a more precise and better idea of the surgical site and better precision.
    • Better Precision– Another advantage of the form of surgery is enhanced precision. The surgeon can remove the gallbladder precisely with the help of robotic arms. Most minor damage is observed to the nearby tissues. Thus, less blood loss and less pain are experienced by the patient.
    • Quicker Recovery– An individual undergoing a robotic surgery recovers quicker than an open surgery. Small incisions, less blood loss, and less pain make it easy for the patient to heal. It also leads to fewer hospital stays and allows patients to resume routine activities as soon as possible.
