Apart from genetic reasons, there are a number of causes resulting in disease like cancer. But being a wide area of the disease itself, there are a number of associated myths misleading masses about cancer. The same is also misguiding many patients in regard to treatments as well. For example, in some sections, chemotherapy is considered to be a painful treatment but the truth is that the pain a patient undergoes during this therapy is not directly associated with chemo itself. Same way some people consider cancer as a death warrant itself. As a result such patients either don’t report at all report when it is too late. Although lack of proper information and awareness is already a challenge but myths associated with cancer are adding to it. Hence right information is the key in regard to myths and disease itself. Some common myths are as follows:-
If I don’t smoke, I won’t get cancer:- smoking can potentially cause cancer but this is not the only reason if one catches cancer. Merely not smoking is not a full-fledged guarantee that you cannot catch cancer at all. Cancer may occur due to diverse reasons like unhealthy lifestyle, genetic factors, alcohol intake etc. be aware of the other reasons as well and consult a doctor if you feel any initial symptoms without hesitation.
Biopsy can spread the disease: – it’s not true; rather biopsy is the first essential step to confirm the diagnosis of cancer.
Chemotherapy is a painful treatment:- this is not an entirely true statement. First of all, Chemotherapy is a treatment to fight cancer. Secondly, the pain occurring during chemotherapy is of cancer itself. The intensity of pain may depend upon the condition or stage of cancer; like if cancer has spread to the other organs, liver, bones etc. then it is a condition that may have been causing pain. That is why is always suggested to go for cancer treatment as early as possible, or else it will add to more risks and associated pains. Hence pain is not directly associated with chemotherapy; rather it is a treatment to provide a pain-free life to the patient.
Hair loss is permanent in Chemotherapy: – Thinking about a cancer patient going under treatment, the majority of the times a picture of bald-headed person appears first in mind. Because through cinemas, TV etc this is the perceived image of a cancer patient taking treatment we have. But adding to this there is a myth that the hair loss that occurred during treatment is permanent. This is not true. In 90% of patients after completing the plant cycle of chemotherapy, get their hair back.
Eating Sugar increases the risk of cancer:- this is not true, rather a small amount of sugar is surely necessary for our body to work. Although eating excessive sugar is not healthy but it is not proven that sugar can increase the risk of cancer.
Being diagnosed with cancer is like a death sentence:- Now this is the myth masses are more ‘suffered’ from. First of all, cancer is a curable disease. There are a number of treatments available which can make a person entirely disease-free. From surgery, radiation, chemotherapy to targeted therapy, immunotherapies etc. are helping the patients. Also in today’s era with advancements, there are plenty of options for a cancer patient. The risk of losing life occurs with the delayed treatment, seriousness of disease. But cancer itself is not equal to a death sentence. Hence report early for the treatment and early recovery.
