Narayana Health City has a prodigious success story to tell, PEL-DIA, an assessment instrument that suggests the type of delivery a women should go through during labour.
Dr. Lavanya and her team from Narayana Health City has made a mark in the international medical community with her innovation. The team has designed an equipment that can detect pelvic and foetal diameter, which in turn can help maternal and foetal morbidity. The team recently bagged the prestigious CAMTech-USAID Medical Hack-a-thon award for the instrument named PEL-DIA. The concept was selected among 85 countries across the globe. The hack-a-thon aims to address some of the concerns in India about reproductive, maternal newborn and child (RMNCH).
How the instrument works:
When a women goes into labour, there’s a need to assess, if she is favourable for a vaginal, normal delivery or if she has to be taken for an elective Caesarean section. The assessment the doctor’s make is often subjective. Test of X-rays and MRI of the pelvis aren’t too safe either.
The equipment conceived by Dr.Lavanya assesses the pelvic diameter and also that of the baby (foetus) to avoid maternal and fetal stress, morbidity and mortality. A consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Health City, Dr. Lavanya aims to address one of the pressing issues in reproductive and maternal sciences. The doctor adds, “This recognition gives us the impetus to develop a prototype of this design and take it to the next level.”
