Common Side Effects of Radiation Therapy

Side effects vary depending on the treatment area, duration, and dosage. Here are some of the most frequent challenges patients face:

Skin Changes: Radiation may cause redness, dryness, peeling, or itching in the treated area. Over time, the skin might feel tender or appear darker.
Fatigue: Many patients feel a profound sense of tiredness, which may persist even after resting. This fatigue results from the body’s healing processes and the energy spent on repairing healthy tissues.
Nausea and Appetite Loss: Radiation targeting the abdomen, chest, or head often leads to nausea, vomiting, or decreased appetite.
Hair Loss: Hair loss occurs when radiation therapy affects the scalp or other areas with hair. The extent of loss depends on the treatment’s intensity.
Oral and Throat Discomfort: Radiation in the head and neck region may cause dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, or mouth sores.
Diarrhoea and Abdominal Discomfort: Patients receiving radiation for abdominal or pelvic cancers may experience diarrhoea, cramping, or bloating.

Practical Tips for Managing Side Effects

Caring for Skin

Keep Skin Clean and Moisturised: Use lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap to clean the affected area. Apply a non-irritating moisturiser recommended by your healthcare provider.
Avoid Harsh Products: Steer clear of perfumes, alcohol-based products, and abrasive exfoliants. These may worsen irritation.
Protect Skin from the Sun: Cover treated areas and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Combating Fatigue

Prioritise Rest and Sleep: Plan your day to include short naps and ensure you get 7–8 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night.
Stay Physically Active: Engage in light activities like walking or gentle yoga to boost energy levels.
Eat Nutrient-Dense Foods: A balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains supports recovery and combats fatigue.

Managing Nausea and Appetite Loss

Eat Smaller, Frequent Meals: Consume easily digestible foods in smaller portions throughout the day.
Stay Hydrated: Sip water, herbal teas, or electrolyte-rich drinks to prevent dehydration.
Try Ginger or Peppermint: These natural remedies may reduce nausea and improve digestion.
Consult a Dietitian: Seek professional advice to create a personalised eating plan.

Addressing Oral and Throat Issues

Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution after meals to reduce irritation. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and alcohol-free mouthwash.
Opt for Soft Foods: Choose soups, smoothies, and mashed vegetables to avoid discomfort while eating.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to alleviate dry mouth and aid swallowing.

Managing Diarrhoea and Abdominal Discomfort

Follow a Low-Fibre Diet: Reduce high-fibre foods like beans and raw vegetables to ease diarrhoea.
Stay Hydrated: Replenish fluids with water and electrolyte solutions.
Avoid Trigger Foods: Steer clear of fatty, spicy, or dairy-rich foods if they worsen symptoms.

Emotional Wellness During Radiation Therapy

Cancer treatment can take a toll on mental health. Patients often feel anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed. These strategies can help maintain emotional well-being:

Build a Support Network: Talk openly with family and friends about your feelings. Joining a cancer support group can also provide comfort and understanding.
Practise Mindfulness: Techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or journaling help reduce stress and promote relaxation.
Seek Professional Help: If feelings of sadness or anxiety persist, consult a counsellor or therapist specialising in cancer care.
