Hip Replacement Surgery gives new life to patient

Narayana Multispecialty Hospital Jaipur recently performed a complex hip replacement surgery on a 50-year-old man who was less than four-feet-tall and suffering with Neurofibromatosis (Genetic disorder of the nervous system which causes tumors to grow on nerves). Due to certain idiopathic (reasons unknown) causes, his bone joints were damaged completely, which made Mr. Gowardhan bed-ridden for more than a month. Upon being rejected for ‘Hip Replacement Surgery’ by several hospitals due to his stunted growth, abnormal spine shape and genetic disorder of nerves, he consulted Dr. Neeraj Aggarwal, Consultant – Joint Replacement at Narayana Multispecialty Hospital, Jaipur, where he successfully underwent the surgery.
“Hip replacement surgeries are common but this was a challenging case due to the multiple complexities associated. The implants used for the replacement surgery had to be customized to suit the size of hips and bones.” He added, “Providing spinal anesthesia was a challenge because patient’s spine was not straight which compressed the air carrying capacity of lungs and giving general anesthesia to him was dangerous. However, this was effectively managed and overcome.”
Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that disturbs cell growth in the nervous system, causing tumors to form on nerve tissue. Neurofibromatosis is usually diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood. Neurofibromatosis may affect the bones, causing severe pain, as a result of which, Mr. Gowardhan had started experiencing excruciating pain of the joints, thus leading to immobility. The condition not only damaged the spine, but also affected the joints and disturbed the body alignment. The prevalence of this disease is reported to be around one in 3000 births.
Institute of Bone, Joints & Spine at Narayana Multispecialty Hospital Jaipur is equipped with the latest technologies to offer quality treatment. The hospital is equipped to take care of joint, knee, hip and shoulder replacement, arthritis and custom implant surgeries. The expert orthopedic consultant team is trained in world-class arthroscopy – knee and shoulder and replacements involving knee & hip. The experts at the hospital work towards quick rehabilitation of the patient leading to better quality of life.
