Hair Loss Awareness Month

August is observed as hair loss awareness month. In recent days, hair loss is one of the most common complain addressed in dermatology clinics. There are myriad reasons of hair loss which can be reversible or irreversible. Hair loss can be diffuse or patchy. Most important thing is the proper approach to the problem and treatment protocol.

There are various causes of hair loss mainly hormonal imbalance, stress, medication, lack of proper diet, genetics and various scalp disorder. It is important to know 60 to 100 hairs are usually lost daily and on days of shampoo number can go as high as 150. When the amount is above average, you need to consult your dermatologist for a complete evaluation.

It is important to know any stress, postpartum (after giving birth), chemotherapy, febrile illness, typhoid etc. can be common causes for increase hair loss.

Straightening, curling or any other chemical treatment can damage your hair and increase hair loss. The people who must treat their hairs with such chemicals should use sulphate free shampoo and conditioner to prevent damage. Heat protection sprays can also be considered.

Patients suffering from seborrheic dermatitis commonly known as dandruff or white flakes have oily scalp and causes excessive itching, such people should clean their scalp with shampoo containing ketoconazole, zinc, selenium sulphide, coal, tar, etc. as recommended by their dermatologist and rinse hair with normal shampoo after it.

Oil acts just as a conditioner and not as a growth factor for your hair and can be applied once or twice a week half an hour before bath. Warm coconut oil is a good choice.

Minoxidil and finasteride are FDA approved treatment which can be taken in proper guidance and observation of your dermatologist. Hair serums containing procapril, vitamin K, azelic have shown beneficial effects on hair loss. Some leave on lotion with UVB filter protects your hair from sun damage. Diet must include protein, iron, omega3, calcium, vitamin D in right proportion.

Various therapies like platelet-rich plasma, low light laser therapy, dermaroller, micro-pigmentation play a commendable role in treatment. Hair transplant is the last resort which not only helps to restore your hair but also your confidence. If treatment intervention are taken at an appropriate time we can significantly abate this problem.
