FROM FARM TO PLATE, MAKE FOOD SAFE

World Food Safety Day is celebrated every year on June 7 to draw worldwide attention to contaminated food and water health consequences. The absence of food safety may harm the health of people. World Food Safety Day is celebrated every year, to mark the importance of food safety.

Food safety refers to routines in preparing, handling, and storing food meant to prevent foodborne illness and injury. Safe food handling practices and procedures are thus implemented at every stage of the food production life cycle to curb these risks and prevent harm to consumers.

Four (4) Basic Steps for Food Safety to reduce the risk of food poisoning

  • Always wash your food, counters, and cooking tools. Wash hands in soapy warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  • (Keep Apart) Keep raw foods to themselves.
  • Foods need to get hot and stay hot.
  • Put food in the fridge right away.

Food Safety Management Systems Over the years, food safety and quality issues have gone beyond just the avoidance of food-borne pathogens, chemical intoxicants, and other hazards. A food hazard can enter/come into the food at any stage of the food chain, therefore, adequate management throughout the food chain is essential. Food safety and quality can be ensured through :

  • Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
  • Good Handling Practices (GHP)
  • Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP)
