A 13 year young girl studying in 8thstandard in Dehradun had been experiencing a hunchback deformity forthe last 3 years. Her deformity was so visible and progressive in nature that she started feeling shy in going outside for functions. The deformity also led to a lot of mental trauma for the patient and affected her studies and personal life as well.
During this period of 3 years, sheconsulted far too many doctors based atvarious metro cities, who investigatedher case and diagnosed it as adeformity of the spine known askyphosis. Kyphosis spread due to acongenital problem in her spine in whichone vertebra deformed during thedevelopmental stage and therefore, thespine eventually got an overalldeformity as the child developed further. If the deformity was allowed to progressany further, it would start applying anincreased pressure on the lungs and the heart, which would result in the child being repetitively sick with lunginfections and many other lung diseases leading to lots of morbidity. Also, the condition is bound to affect child’ssocial life as well because the visible deformity might cause problems in getting married as well. On the otherside, correction of such deformity has a very high risk of getting paralysis after surgery due to a possibility ofgrievous injury to the spinal cord in the process. Correction required removing one whole deformed vertebrafollowed by forceful correction of the deformity with rods and screws. Upon her consultation at various othercenters all over India, doctors had explained the same with a correction in hunchback to a minimal extent.Additionally, they had also explained a possibility of prolonged stay in ICU after operation with a very high costof surgery.
Luckily, she contacted Dr. Hitesh Modi, a qualified spine and scoliosis surgeon at Narayana Multispecialty Hospital, Ahmedabad. Dr.Modi is the only Ph.D Spine Surgeon in the entire western India with more than 8 years of experience in the same field at different centers of the world such as Canada, Hong Kong, South Koreaetc. Dr.Modi examined her condition, studied her case and assured her that her high chances of getting deformity could be corrected with minimal risk at best(slight weakness in legs). To the parents delight, the totalcost for the surgery performend by Narayana Multispeciality Hospital turned out to be very economic andaffordable, as NHM believes that children are the precious future of our country. Both the girl and her parentswere fully convinced, and Dr.Modi went on to operate on her for more than 8 straight hours. He removed one whole vertebra from her back and corrected the deformity with rods and screws, without afflicting any injury onthe spinal cord. The operation was successful and the patient moved both her legs during the spine surgery (use anchor text as spine surgery) as wellas immediately after the operation. Afterwards, she was kept in the ICU for one day under strict monitoring andthen shifted back to her room once she was stable. She was able to stand and walk right on the second dayafter the operation. Her self confidence skyrocketed with a huge boost in her self esteem as her posture anddeformity showed remarkable improvement. She was discharged right after a week of operation, and afterbeing on her own for six months today, she is doing mighty well.
In today’s online era keeping children away from a screen is a huge challenge for…
