Sigmoidoscopy: In sigmoidoscopy, the procedure is similar to colonoscopy, but instead of the entire colon, only the bottom third, the sigmoid colon, where 60% of colon cancers are found, is looked at. For sigmoidoscopy, the preparation is simpler and often sedation is not required.
Virtual colonoscopy: This is a convenient alternative for those who can’t have a conventional colonoscopy due to breathing issues, a twisted or narrowed colon or some bleeding disorder. This test is a 3D CT scan that can take a detailed picture of the colon after it is filled with air. It’s over in around 15 minutes, is less invasive and doesn’t need sedation.
