Jaipur: Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur set another milestone in the field of cardiovascular surgery by performing the highly complex ‘Bentall procedure with hemi arch repair’ on a patient suffering from abnormal enlargement of the Aorta (Aortic aneurysm). Aorta is the main blood vessel that supplies oxygenated blood to the body and any problem with the aorta can quickly become a serious & life-threatening medical emergency.

44-year-old Kanta devi (name changed) from Dausa district came to Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur, with complaints of severe & unexplained spells of body pain, nausea & lack of appetite. Multiple diagnostic tests were conducted which revealed an aneurysm (abnormal enlargement) of the Aorta extending from the aortic root to the arch of aorta along with a malfunctioning valve. Extension of the aneurysm up-till the ‘aortic arch’ made the surgery even more complicated as blood vessels that supply blood to the brain originate from that portion.

“While Bentall Surgeries are performed in higher cardiac surgical centers around the world, Bentall surgery with hemi arch replacement is extremely rare with high mortality rates. Such surgeries require detailed surgical planning as the brain vessels are also involved. The core temperature of the body is progressively reduced to 18 to 20 degree Celsius & the whole blood circulation in the body is stopped for approx.  30 minutes during the surgery when the aneurysm in the ‘arch portion’ of the aorta is repaired. Minimal blood is only pumped to the brain via arm vessels to maintain neurological function, during this time.” said Dr. Ankit Mathur, Sr. Consultant – Cardiac Surgery who performed the highly complicated surgery.

The surgery took over 9 hours in which the entire diseased portion of the aorta including the valves, were removed & replaced with synthetic tube-like grafts. Blood vessels were then re-connected to help restore normal blood supply. The blood was slowly warmed, introduced into the body and the heart was re-started post the surgical repair added Dr. Ankit Mathur.

Though the condition is extremely rare and critical, well-timed and appropriate treatment can save the lives of those who are affected with it. Equipped with advanced treatment facilities and experts, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur has become the most sought-after hospital in the region for patients suffering from common to highly complex & rare diseases.
