First of Its Kind Bariatric Surgery on a Woman With Chronic Kidney Disease at NH RTIICS, Kolkata

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy performed on 53 years old lady from Bangladesh suffering from Chronic Kidney disease stage 5 (on maintenance haemodialysis)- First of its kind in Eastern India

Mrs. Razia Begum, 53 years old lady from Bangladesh presented to Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences, Kolkata with BMI (Body Mass Index) of 38 kg/m2 (normal 21-25).  She is known hypertensive and asthmatic. She was diagnosed with Chronic kidney disease stage 5, on maintenance haemodialysis. During optimization for Renal Transplant, she was deemed unfit due to her morbid obesity by the transplant team. Hence, she was referred to Bariatric Outpatient Department for a formal assessment (She previously has been on dietary restriction and medication but unfortunately failed to lose weight). After evaluation by Dr. Shubhayu Banerjee and Dr. Sanjay Kumar Dubey, it was decided that she would benefit from a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) which would aid in her weight reduction. This would make her fit for Renal Transplant which will save her life. Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) is a restrictive procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and limits food intake.

She was discharged after 4 days of the surgery in a stable condition and reviewed in the Surgical Out Patient Department after 2 weeks and has lost 15 kg already. She has been advised to do normal household activities but has to follow strict diet regime and has to monitor blood sugar thrice daily. Her dialysis will continue as before (thrice a week) and she is now awaiting Renal Transplant.
