Acetabular Fractures

What are Acetabular Fractures?

Acetabulum and pelvis is a connection between the upper and the lower part of the body. The acetabulum is a part of the pelvis that meets the upper end of the thigh bone or the femoral head, so as to form the hip joint. Now a fracture to this bone means that the person will really have a problem walking normally in the future. These fractures can occur at any age.

It is a type of fracture that is common in old age due to the weakening of bones and rare at a young age unless the person does not have any severe high-energy event such as a car collision or a fall from a height. Acetabular fracture is a split of the bone in the socket portion of the “ball-and-socket” hip joint.

As mentioned earlier, such fractures are not common and they occur much less frequently than fractures of the upper femur or femoral head i.e. the “ball” portion of the joint. The major cure of acetabular fractures is surgery, which helps to restore the natural anatomy of the hip and stabilize the hip joint and helps the patient in providing them back with their normal lifestyle.

Anatomy

There are several joints in a human body and the hip being one of the largest amongst them, has a “ball and socket” joint. This socket that is formed by the acetabulum, is a part of the pelvic bone. The upper part of the femur (thigh bone) is known as the femoral head. This femoral head makes the “ball” part of this joint and the “socket” is called the acetabulum. The bone surfaces of the ball and socket are covered with a smooth, slippery substance known as articular cartilage. It protects and cushions the bones and enables them to move easily.
