Dr.Rao has completed his M.Ch(Paediatric Surgery) from LTM General Hospital, Mumbai and FRCS (Paed) from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, UK. He is currently a Senior Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Head of the Department. He is also actively involved in transplantation of liver and kidney at Narayana Health City.

Dr.Rao has also set up and runs the pediatric airway surgery program at Narayana Health City.
